Desert dust is not just a cosmetic problem. Fine grit works into zipper teeth, hook-and-loop closures, optic caps, pack seams, firearm cases, vehicle recovery gear, and every other place you do not want abrasion. Start With a Dry, Controlled Cleanup
Bring gear into a shaded, well-ventilated area before you start. Direct sun can heat metal, optics, and synthetic materials fast, while wind can blow the same dust straight back into your work area. Lay down a clean tarp, old towel, or cardboard so you can see what is coming off and keep gear out of the dirt.
Shake out packs, pouches, jackets, sleeping bags, and soft cases outdoors first. Open every pocket, turn items upside down, and work closures slowly. A soft nylon brush, clean paintbrush, or detailing brush is useful for seams, webbing, buckles, and zipper tracks. Use light strokes.
